Warsaw, MO

The Yellow Deli on the Osage River

Long ago in quaint downtown Warsaw, an idea sprouted... Located in the heart of historic downtown Warsaw is a special place where friends can meet together on "common ground."   This building used to be the old Osage Hotel, until a complete transformation took place in 2008. That spring the doors of The Common Ground Café opened wide and the town of Warsaw hasn’t been the same since. Many folks have come over the years to relax and enjoy a meal in the company of friends and family, enjoy the beautiful view of the Osage River, or to talk with the folks at The Common Ground Café. We appreciate everyone who’s come through the doors over the years.

But after over a decade as The Common Ground Café, we felt an urging like the salmon who return to their spawning grounds. We desired to return to our simpler roots as The Yellow Deli, as our restaurants were known in the 1970s. So January 1st, 2020, we re-opened with a new name and a new menu.

And what's more, in 2023 we acquired the building next door and opened the Common Sense Market.  There you can find an assortment of natural and wholesome products, many of them made by us at one of our farms or communities abroad.  We have a little something for everyone; high quality items that anyone can enjoy.

We have good, wholesome food, homey craftsmanship, and a nice environment to eat a meal... that is The Yellow Deli! We hope your dining experience is pleasant and you can be sure, "We are with you..."

Katoomba, NSW (Australia)

Outdoor seating at the Yellow Deli

Many have hoped and even dreamed of living a life of peace, where love and care for others was supreme.

"But is this really possible today?” And if it were, how would it come about? Decades ago we asked ourselves this same question. It seemed to us that true love would create that kind of “togetherness,” and in fact, make it possible. But we knew our own love fell short. What we needed was to find the Source of Love. And you know what? We did! To us, He is not a mystical, religious figure, but a real human being that felt the same struggles we feel. His name is Yahshua the Messiah. Through Him our dreams were fulfilled and for the last 40 years our people have been working and raising our families together, building communities and tribes where love is the center of our life.

In our beginnings back in the early 70’s, all we wanted was to be together, but we needed to find a way to support ourselves. So, we found a very small, humble little building and using a lot of resourcefulness and creativity, we transformed it into a warm and inviting place we called, “The Yellow Deli.” It was a unique café, built with discarded materials that, to us, were still quite useful - much like our own lives. But more amazing than the beauty and charm of the rustic décor was the life and spirit of those who had actually found love. Thus, that first little Yellow Deli became “a place to belong.”

The life you have seen in the Common Ground Café over the past five years here in Katoomba is the same life we first experienced in the Yellow Deli of old. It is the exact life and spirit you will also find in our homes. Since our early days, we have grown into a network of communities all over the world. But we wanted to return to our “original name and pattern” of The Yellow Deli, so that internationally you could easily recognize us as a united people, a spiritual nation of twelve tribes, with the same heart and the same vision and the same love.

We have made this cafe with the identical heart and dedication to service as in our earliest beginnings. You will see it expressed in the people who staff it and in the fine detail, yet rustic craftsmanship of the Deli interior. You are so important to us, and we hope you feel the welcome and hospitality that characterizes our life together. You may find that our café can be quite busy, but please, feel free to ask if you want to know more about us - as this is our greatest desire to share what we have come to know with you personally.

Nelson, BC

main entrance

Nestled in the beautiful Kootenay Mountains of British Columbia, in the historic town of Nelson, our Yellow Deli restaurant welcomes you. Formerly known as the Preserved Seed, we have come a long way since our beginnings back in 2001, when we started as a tea house with three tables. We started with yerba mate, our own fresh baked bread, and some baked goods from our bakery, which are still main features today. The restaurant features plenty of outdoor and indoor seating with gorgeous views of the lake and the town. A rustic wood stove creates a cozy atmosphere in the winter.

We strive to provide our patrons with a superb experience, healthy food, a lovely atmosphere and affordable prices. Whether you're after a steaming hot Deli Rose sandwich, a fresh salad, a bowl of Sunshine soup, or a cup of yerba mate, come on over. We'd love to serve you.

Oneonta, NY

The Yellow Deli in Oneonta

We opened our doors to the people of Oneonta, New York in February 2010 after three years of work on our two-story deli. We are (normally) open 24-hours a day, 5 days a week, from Sunday at noon till Friday at 3 p.m, but we currently have limited hours, closing from 3am until 11am.

In Oneonta we have the privilege of serving many locals, as well as students from Oneonta's two colleges: Hartwick College and SUNY Oneonta. We also are visited by travelers who wander into town from the nearby exit off Interstate 88. We are located on the corner of Routes 7 and 23 which is also one of two entrances into Oneonta’s old downtown.

Folks love to warm themselves by either of our fireplaces and watch our dumb waiter ride up and down bringing them their scrumptious sandwiches. They are discovering the irresistible sourdough artisan breads that our lovely bakers created that day. We also have open forum Rap Sessions every Tuesday night at 7 p.m. that we would love for you to come and join us. Walk around and enjoy murals on the brick or barn wood walls painting tales of birds of every feather flocking together in one tree, or reviving the mystery of what happened to the Movements of the ’60s and ’70s.

If you’re from New England, you may have been in one of our other places unaware. We’ve also run eating places called “The Common Ground Café”, “The Blue Blinds Bakery”, “The Oak Hill Kitchen” and “The Yellow Deli in Rutland, VT”.

If you’re ever down around this way and want to get out of the hustle bustle of the world; want a quiet place to study or think, or just want some peace of mind, you’ll have to stop in and set a spell.

Valley Center, CA

Front Sign of the Yellow Deli in Valley Center

In the late fall of 2006, we opened our humble little farmstand on Lilac with a pop-up tent and a plastic table. We offered coffee, hot yerba maté, muffins and an array of fresh homegrown organic produce. Soon after, we started selling homemade apple pies for the holiday season.

We did all we could to make it a nice place for our neighbors to stop by. The little house behind our stand was nearly in ruins, yet there was a hope of restoration in our hearts. We had the vision that someday our sleepy little farmstand would be a warm and welcoming place to sit and have a steamed sandwich or a dessert. But it was going to need some tender loving care and lot of hard work.

We started by sweeping the steps and pulling out the weeds. Then we painted our little house a bright cheery yellow. We knew The Yellow Deli (even a little one) would be the perfect spot for all of our neighbors to come and find some old-fashioned hospitality. It is nestled in a peaceful valley, far from any other retail establishment. Out in the country, our farmstead is shaded by big ancient oaks, kept company by the cows in the surrounding pastures and is nicely located next to year round Keys Creek.

When we first set out, our little bubbling brook was hidden behind wild overgrowth, but we dreamed of a day when we could offer hospitality to our neighbors as they sat by creek side tables. So we put our “hands to the plow” and without looking back, began the work of restoration at our little farmstead.
Over a period of two years, the dilapidated, old Sears kit house was transformed into a cozy nook, where all are welcome to come, for a bit of rest and reprieve from the fast-paced modern life.

The overgrowth was cleared out, right down to the creek and is slowly, but surely blossoming into a lovely little garden. We acquired a mobile kitchen and through much effort converted it into a quaint Deli kitchen.

Now our mobile kitchen lives next door to our beautiful little farmstead and from there we serve our delicious Deli menu items. In early spring of 2011, we opened up our little Deli on Lilac Road and now our neighbors can behold the vision we sought after. We have an inviting place to meet and serve our neighbors, and offer them good food, fresh produce and a place to belong.
