If you were around in the 1980's, you might remember the Common Sense Restaurant and Wholesome Food Market. It was open 24 hours and had hot-steamed sandwiches. The building was destroyed in a fire, many years have passed, the Simon the Tanner shoestore came and went, but the people behind the "Common Sense" (as it was called) remained here in town up on the hill.

Well, in the summer of 2024, we opened the Yellow Deli. With a similar décor and menu as the old Common Sense, the deli is a peaceful place to bring a friend. Our specialty, like all of the Yellow Delis, is hot-steamed sandwiches, homemade soup, desserts, and salads.

One unique feature of this Yellow Deli is we serve pancakes and maple syrup. This is because we have a sugarbush in Norton, and in the back of the Deli is a maple-syrup bottling facility.

You can also check out the market while you're waiting for your food. It contains local products and products made in our communities around the globe.

This Yellow Deli opened its doors January 1, 2023. We have a rich history of serving our hot-steamed sandwiches, beginning in 1973 in Chattanooga, TN. We look forward to welcoming you to the same sandwich, the same spirit, and what has always made the Yellow Deli a favorite place to eat again and again!

We opened in 2022 and we'd like to invite you to an amazing Yellow Deli overlooking the Bay of Biscay.

After opening as a small storefront in 2013, we have gradually been adding to our seating (and menu) to be able to offer you the kind of care and service that you have come to know from us over the years. Starting as the Common Ground on Osborne in 1995, to the Sherbrook Common Ground from 2001 to 2009, we have found our new home (and name) right in the downtown of St. Boniface

When you enter the Yellow Deli in Courtenay, you might find yourself reliving some ancient memories of an era long gone. Formerly a day care center, it was bought in 2005 with the intent of housing a cafe / bakery. Much restoration took place in that old house before the Common Ground Cafe opened its door in 2010 and today you can still see the original windows and front entrance adorning the Yellow Deli. Inside all of the decor is made from recycled materials gathered locally in the Comox Valley. Here you will find beach driftwood, hand-hewn beams, weathered barnwood and shanties built with the care and the love of the One who created us in His image. All of us who work there live together, and together we want to provide you with something that is hardier and harder to find - true food. While not strictly organic we labor to provide you with quality wholesome food at an affordable price, in an atmosphere that is warm, inviting and nourishing. Some of this food is even produced right here on our farm in Merville, BC. Since you might not find what you are accustomed to in any other eating establishment, please feel free to ask any of our staff for more information about our menu or about the life of those who labor to serve you with the fruit of the spirit. Our main Yellow Deli with full seating and service is found just around the corner at 59 Main Street opened November 21, 2021.
